The highlight on the way out is the brutal cliimb up Sleeping Indian, equivalent to a Tour de France Category 3 climb. The way out follows College, which is busy but has a decent shoulder, but it is one of the shortest ways to Fallbrook. Be careful on N River Road - busy with no shoulder -- I recommend moving to at least the right tire track of the lane to force cars to pass you by crossing the center line rather than by squeezing by you within the lane at 50+ mph.
The highlight of the return trip is the detour in Fallbrook to take Alta Vista. Only a short stretch on Hwy 76, but be careful of merging to the left turning lane at Camino del Rey -- I recommend going straight through the light and stopping with the cross traffic to wait for the light. The return on Melrose is a lot like College - see which you like better.
